Assistant Archaeologists at Oracle School

On Saturday 11th November two pupils from Bedford Oracle School took part in an Archaeology Club Training Session at Wrest Park House. It was provided by Headland Archaeology, a business based next door to the School who provide services to builders in the UK who must, by law, have their land surveyed by archaeologists before excavation begins.

Barney and Kurt were allowed to look around Headland’s offices and warehouse, where they saw archaeology in progress. They were able to handle artefacts found recently on some building sites, and the archaeologist explained what the objects were, and their possible dates. Some were as much as four thousand years old! Barney and Kurt were also allowed to handle soil, and see how soil was analysed for archaeological remains – they saw that archaeologists do not shy away from mud and dirt!

After this, the boys went back to Wrest Park House Education Centre, where they were able to look at, analyse and handle some of the collections kept there. They spoke to the Curator who was able to help them work out what the mystery artefacts were used for, and their dates. Both pupils enjoyed the session, and felt they learnt a lot. Participation in this training session will allow them to complete an AQA Unit Award in Historical Research in due course.
